to a curious mind nothing is ever the same

Hi Im Rachel - A Yoga and Mindfulness teacher and retreat leader.

As a surfer and a mum I know firsthand how all life is a balancing act and work to share an ease and gentleness with oneself in the process of dancing that balance. I have travelled extensively sharing yoga & mindfulness tools with all ages and Im devoted to making self-care an accessible and sustainable part of life.

My teaching journey began in 2009 after teacher training and residential study at Yasodhara Ashram. I set off as a bright eyed gal in her early 20s teaching as much yoga as I could as a not for profit coordinator. I taught in family shelters and drop-in centres, high schools, after school programs. Truth is, the barriers to wellness have always pushed me to share more. I have since taught thousands of classes, still strive to make these self care tools accessible and continue to deepen my practice as a forever student. I currently offer in person and online classes and regular workshops and retreats.

With certifications in Hatha, Vinyasa, Mindfulness, Qi-Gong and Kundalini Yoga I offer a multifaceted perspective to this ancient and ever evolving with the times practice.

In my classes you can expect creative sequencing, honouring tradition with layers of modifications to express yourself and plenty of time in Savasana to soak in all in.

“Rachel Barrett, a Halifax-based yoga teacher, starts each morning by dancing with her two-year-old daughter, Lola, in their kitchen.

The dancing is a ritual that Barrett began years ago on one February morning, when she and a friend noticed they both felt colder, darker and more sombre during this time of the year. “We wondered, why don’t we make February a little something different? Show up for ourselves and do things that invigorate us,” she says. “Even if it’s just taking a minute in the morning.” Barrett committed to a daily mini dance party, something purely delightful that allowed her “to draw back into joy.” The ritual felt especially vital when Barrett was pregnant and postpartum. Now, she calls dreary February “FABuary,” and posts daily videos of her dancing on Instagram (@luminousandwild), hoping to inject some silliness into her followers’ lives over the course of the month.”

“I’ve attended several yoga classes with Rachel over the years and also a yoga and surf retreat in N.S. I can say that Rachel puts a lot of time and energy into her classes and retreats. She has a beautiful and loving way of creating magical experiences for her students.

Her classes are both soothing and energizing and when she sings it just brings you into a trance! Her voice is so lovely! I always leave feeling calm, relaxed but also powerful. Her energy is so contagious and inspiring. Rachel is one of my favourite teachers to practice with, and if you have the opportunity to practice or attend a retreat, you are in for a treat!!”
